Note : This is the full draft of the article I wrote for my 2nd issue of my pamphlet, thus, it is unedited.
When I was young, I would eat the typical sugar-ladened cereal for breakfast with lots of milk. I have to admit, now as an adult, I am not too impressed with the companies that made those cereals. Didn't they have kids of their own? How could they manufacture such nutritionally deficient crap and say it was suitable for breakfast? sigh. Capitalism is so horrid...
I went through a painful period of being overweight and profound self-consciousness. It's very hard when you know attractive members of the opposite sex look at you without the slightest interest. : (
I lost the weight by eliminating all junk food completely and utterly from my diet and eating everything wholesome and low fat. In fact, All-Bran cereal was very helpful in encouraging my metabolism to speed up mightily.
For breakfast, I then ate whole grain cereals, or, on the weekends, my family would enjoy a typical American breakfast of Eggs, Bacon (Turkey), Toast (Whole Wheat), Hashbrowns and Orange Juice.
I had slimmed down, but breakfast was still a meal which left me feeling heavy in the morning, and not terribly energetic. I would spend weekend mornings watching Xena and Hercules, until I felt I could stand up again. : )
Furthermore, I always found my stomach felt somewhat upset after eating cereal with milk.
It was not until last year that I began eating a breakfast which leaves me feeling light and energetic.
Back in the mid-80's Harvey and Marilyn Diamond wrote a book called Fit for Life.
I personally find it excellent.
Very smart and the knowledge in the book "feels" right, and the Diamonds "feel" like they care (caring. so vital a feeling isn't it?)
First, the majority of the world's population is in fact lactose intolerant.
As I found out last year, that includes me.
I no longer consume any dairy and suffer no more stomach cramps (I eat cereal with Soya Milk or Orange Juice now).
Second, the Principle of Proper Food Combining.
Meat requires digestive juices be acidic for proper digestion.
Carbs (bread, pasta, starch, sugar) requires digestive juice be basic for proper digestion.
Acids and Bases cancel each other out.
My family's American Breakfasts were a nightmare for my digestive system as my body struggled to produce more and more digestive juice which kept on being neutralized.
sigh. My poor body. How much it has been abused. : (
Third, the wonder of fruit juice.
Every morning now I have fruit juice for breakfast.
I use whatever fruits are in season.
At the moment, I have 1 Orange, 1 or 2 Apples, 1 or 2 Plums, and a cup of Costco's Frozen Mixed Berries.
I peel off the skin of all the fruit, including the apples and plums (I find the skins are too much roughage for my stomach).
I cut up the fruit. Plop into my blender. Add a little water on the bottom to reduce friction on the blades. And blend.
The juice is pulpy, rich and sweet, full of antioxidants, vitamins, and fruit sugars (which gives me a nice little morning buzz which lasts for hours).
Fruit is the easiest food for the body to break down because it is mostly water.
My mornings now are infinitely improved with the introduction of fruit juice as my breakfast.
I do find an increased need to use the washroom, but, when the outside of our body is dirty, we clean it.
It should be the same with the inside and fruit is the ideal brush.
Fit for Life taught me a great deal. I'll impart more of what I've learned in upcoming issues.
